What is a Sports Medicine Physician?
Sports medicine physicians are doctors who have completed medical school, residency, and a sports medicine fellowship that specialize in the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal injuries along with the primary care needs of athletes. They are trained in the latest non-surgical diagnostic and treatment modalities of most musculoskeletal conditions. They work closely with orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and athletic trainers in the creation of personalized treatment plans for patients.
I’m not an “athlete” can I still see a Sports Medicine Physician?
YES! Everyone is an “athlete” just at different levels.
What’s the difference between a Sports Medicine Physician, Physical Therapist, and an Athletic Trainer?
Physical Therapist- A healthcare professional who has typically earned a master’s or doctorate degree in physical therapy. They work closely with Sports Medicine physicians to help patients recover without medication or surgery, by focusing on proper biomechanics of the human body as well as other non-invasive techniques.
Athletic Trainer- A health care professional who provides treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a sports medicine physician. Typically the “first line of defense” when it comes to sideline management of athletes.
**All are KEY members of the care team**
